Newsletter : Sarah
Webb - Winter 2003
Welcome
to my very first newsletter!
Its been quite a busy few months for
me, with a trip to San Francisco in November and several
book-related events in November and December.
Amy-Rose
My daughter, Amy-Rose is getting bigger
and bigger. Shes now almost eight months old and a
funny little thing. Shes just started crawling - if you
can call it that - its more like shuffling along the
floor on her bum. This is Amy-Rose in her buggy.

Family Trip
In November the whole family went to San
Francisco. My partner, Ben was sailing in the Melges 24
Worlds (we all love sailing) and we went with him to cheer
him and his team on. And to shop, of course. Amy-Rose got an
adorable red velvet outfit in the Gap, perfect for Christmas,
and I got a rather splendid cream velvet coat in Saks Fifth
Avenue. Sam, my son, wasnt too interested in any new
clothes but he did find some Captain Underpants
books in Borders that he hadnt read, so he was happy.
San Francisco is an amazing city and well worth a visit.
Our Top Five Things to See and Do in San Francisco
1) The Cable Cars - great fun.
Sam loved hanging on to the poles to the sides of these
antique cable cars and swinging out.
2) The Exploratorium Museum - a
hands on kids science museum - so good that we visited
twice! Its full of cool things to touch, make, explore
and find out about. My favourite was the huge basin where you
could make giant soap bubbles. Ben loved all the electricity
exhibits and Amy-Rose loved the flashing lights. A great
place for the whole family. (Be warned - it makes you act
like a big kid!)
3) Alcatraz Island - well worth a
visit - an extremely un-nerving tourist attraction. A really
fascinating place with an amazing history.
4) Childrens Playground in
the Golden Gate Park - heaven for children and the oldest
public playground in the US apparently - with the best slides
Ive even seen in a park - huge concrete slopes that you
whizz down at break-neck speed, made even faster if you sit
on a piece of cardboard and throw some sand down on the
concrete before you slide. I terrified myself by flying off
the end of the slide onto my bum - luckily I have some
natural padding! The Japanese Tea Garden in the Park is also
fun.
5) San Francisco Museum of Art -
worth a visit for the Rothko alone. I love Mark Rothko and
spent a good half an hour staring at No 14, 1960
a huge red, black and purple abstract painting.
Irish Girls Dinner
We had an Irish Girls Dinner at
author Clare Dowlings house in November. Her husband,
Stuart cooked (good on you, Stuart!) and lots of the Irish
women writers enjoyed a great evening exchanging news and
having a laugh.
The Irish Girls are a group of Irish
women writers who meet regularly for dinners and lunches. We
have a Christmas Dinner soon, which should be fun.
New Covers
Poolbeg are currently redesigning the
covers of my first two books - Three Times a Lady and Always
the Bridesmaid. They will look great - watch out for them in
the shops soon and do let me know what you think.
For those interested, this is an early
treatment of the new Always the Bridesmaid cover - its not
the final version. What do you think?

Sarahs Reading Tips
I love reading and Im in my local librarys book club. Here are some of the books Ive enjoyed recently.
Cathy Kellys new book, Best
of Friends - a lovely, warm read.
Tracy Cullertons first book,
Looking Good - a very original book and extremely
well written for a first novel.
Martina Devlins Venus
Reborn - a clever and witty book with a great main
character, Venus - I know shes a friend of mine but it
really is a fab read!
And Im currently reading Margaret
Atwoods new paperback, Negotiating With The
Dead - a book about the strange business of being a
writer. Highly recommended for any writers or for anyone
interested in the writing process.
Thats it for now. The next newsletter
will be in January, so have a great Christmas and New Years
and keep reading!
Best wishes,
Sarah XXX
